Jonathan’s story

Jonathan’s journey with our BeWell@StepOne service began thanks to the recommendation from his mum who attends our weekly craft group in Paignton. Being autistic, Jonathan finds it challenging to integrate into new groups quickly, but he now looks forward to attending our Men’s Wellbeing Walk each week. Watch or read about Jonathan’s journey below.

In 2015, Jonathan had a breakdown, leading to a two-month leave from work. Feeling isolated and on the brink of another breakdown, he knew he needed a change.

“I had no one. I could feel myself relapsing”.

He started walking, and his mum suggested trying out the BeWell@StepOne Men’s Wellbeing Walk in Paignton to connect with others who may be able to relate to his experiences. When Jonathan first joined the group, he was nervous and didn’t speak to anyone. Our BeWell@StepOne trainers were there to support him, helping to build his confidence and introduce him to others during the walks. Week by week, Jonathan’s confidence grew, and now he looks forward to the sessions.

“We’ve come because we struggle with our mental health, and it’s quite nice to be around people that actually understand.”

On these walks, participants get to enjoy the outdoors and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. Our trainers also teach coping mechanisms and mindful walking, helping everyone to feel calm by observing their surroundings in a relaxed way.

“Dom showed me how to be mindful when I’m walking. He has given me a lot of coping mechanisms and stuff that I never knew I could do. It calms me down.”

The Men’s Wellbeing Walk is now a staple in Jonathan’s weekly routine. He’s even arranged with his boss to have Tuesday mornings off so he can join us.

“It’s now part of my life. I come and see everyone, see how they are.”

For anyone hesitant to join a peer-to-peer support group or wellbeing activity like our walking groups, Jonathan offers encouraging words: “Don’t worry if you’re scared, it took me 3 to 4 weeks to actually build up the confidence to come. But literally, yeah, just come because you will literally love it, like I love it.”
