5 minutes with Lorna Collingwood-Burke

Lorna Collingwood-Burke

Step One Charity is pleased to welcome Lorna Collingwood-Burke as its new Chair of Trustees, marking an exciting new chapter for the organisation.

We recently interviewed Lorna to find out a bit more about her, her role moving forward within the organisation and her hopes and goals for the charity. Read on to find out more about the brilliant woman helping guide Step One Charity into our next chapter.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am originally from Gloucestershire but trained as a nurse and midwife in Bath and also lived and worked in Canada for 10 years. I am married to Tim and have 3 children, one of which still lives in Canada. I also have 2 little granddaughters who live very close by, so I feel very lucky to see them every week. I love walking and in 2022 completed the 196-mile coast to coast Wainright walk. I am also a keen gardener, enjoy reading and travelling.

How did you hear about or know about Step One Charity?

I had heard of Step One Charity in my tenure as the Chief Nursing Officer for NHS Devon but more recently someone told me of the great work the charity did and highlighted to me that the organisation was advertising for a new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

What attracted you to the role of Trustee at Step One Charity?

The main attraction was the work that the Charity did and the difference it made to individuals lives in terms of recovery and stability, as well as the support it gives to other public services.

What do you like most about Step One and the work the charity does?

I was only appointed in January 2026, but Step One has a strong reputation for valuing its staff, something I am passionate about, and providing exceptional care to often very vulnerable people. I am looking forward to meeting everyone that make such a difference daily to individuals in their care.

What would you most like to achieve in your capacity as a Trustee for Step One Charity?

That we build on the good work and reputation that Step One has always done and had. I am keen that all staff feel involved and communicated with as we grow.

What do you think the future holds for Step One Charity?

Both Public services and Charity sector are under greater pressure than ever before. It won’t be easy, but I believe that building on the good work that Step One has already done and bringing together Trustees and staff who are highly skilled and motivated to achieve a secure future for the Charity is key.

What do you feel are the key challenges and/or best opportunities facing the charity sector generally?

Whilst we must focus on the challenges, it is very important to acknowledge the opportunities. We have very experienced Trustees from different sectors of industry and exceptional staff who live in and around Devon and significantly contribute to the Devon health and care system. It is down to all of us to promote the Charity and the work it does to ensure that we continue to strengthen and grow. Over the coming months, the Trustees will be coming together to develop our strategy for the next 3-5 years. I would value it if all staff could bring their thoughts and ideas to the table, be involved and contribute to the work.
