For the past nine years, she has been receiving support from Step One Charity’s Community Support team, who helped her build confidence, manage everyday challenges, and move towards greater independence.
For much of her life, Christina (58) struggled with feeling uncomfortable in her own identity, something that had a significant impact on her mental health and wellbeing. Over time, she began taking small steps that helped her feel more like herself, from changing the way she dressed to growing her hair longer and experimenting with makeup. While these changes brought a sense of freedom and self-acceptance, her journey was not always easy, and at times she experienced isolation and poor mental wellbeing.
Since I was younger, I never really felt comfortable in my own body. It was something I struggled with for many years and it had a significant impact on my mental health and overall wellbeing. For a long time, I tried to live my life presenting as male, but it never felt quite right or aligned with the person I felt I truly was inside.
After moving to a new town and beginning to live independently in 2017, Christina decided to seek support and began working with Step One Charity.
Today, she receives two support sessions each week, where support workers help with things such as managing appointments, finances, and day-to-day tasks that can otherwise feel overwhelming. They also support her to get out into the community, whether that’s shopping, going to the gym, signposting to other organisations like Intercom Trust or attending appointments, small but important steps that have helped build her confidence and independence.
The biggest thing for me is that I feel understood. Before I started receiving support, that was something I often felt was missing. My support workers listen, respect who I am, and encourage me every step of the way.
Christina says one of the most valuable parts of the support is feeling accepted and understood. She values the relationships she has built with her support workers and the encouragement they give her to be herself and work towards her goals.
Over the years, Christina has developed important life skills, including cooking, running errands on her own, and keeping her home organised. While she still finds areas such as technology and finances challenging, having consistent support helps her break things down into manageable steps and maintain routines that work for her.
Looking ahead, Christina is focused on continuing her transition journey, improving her health, and starting to explore more places again, something she used to enjoy before mental health challenges affected her confidence.
Her story highlights how compassionate, person-centred support can empower people to reconnect with themselves, build independence, and move forward with confidence.
