Hi, I’m Rosie. I’m a recent history graduate from the University of Exeter, and this week I completed an internship with Step One with their marketing and fundraising team.
I was able to do this internship thanks to Professional Pathways, which is a scheme run by the University of Exeter that provides training and internship opportunities every summer. Out of over twenty charities that partner with Professional Pathways, I was drawn to Step One because of their values and their mission. Step One supports people with mental health challenges, learning disabilities and neurodiversity to live fulfilling lives and reach their potential through specialist mental health and wellbeing services. Their compassion, collaboration and drive shine through in the work they do. I have loved being in the office and really getting to know Step One and all the fantastic people who make their mission happen.
My first few days in the office involved a crash course in social media and meetings with colleagues from all across Step One. I was given insight into the workings of Step One through discussions with members of the Senior Leadership Team. I was also able to chat with Step One’s volunteer coordinator, who does fantastic work in managing the peer support groups that Step One provides.
One of the highlights of my week was joining one of Step One’s wellbeing walks. Not only was it incredibly good for my personal wellbeing (who doesn’t love getting out of the office and into nature), but it also allowed me to chat to the people that Step One supports. I also joined the craft group and the gardening group and got to see some of Step One’s amazing volunteers in action.
Thanks to my crash course in social media, I’ve been able to contribute to Step One’s marketing across platforms, including collaborating on a blog post about a recent team-building day and creating social media content that went out on Instagram and Facebook.
I have absolutely loved my week at Step One and have been incredibly grateful to everyone who talked to me, showed me the ropes and made me feel so welcome.
If you’ve read this far, why not consider starting your own journey with Step One? Whether that’s through volunteering, donating or popping along to one of their events, it all helps Step One improve people’s lives and make a difference.
