Staff spotlight: Celebrating 10 years of Jonny, Community Support Worker

Man smiling and quote that reads: Celebrating 10 years of Jonny!

This month marks Jonny’s decade-long milestone at Step One Charity! For 10 whole years he has been doing an incredible job as a Support Worker in our local community. Take a closer look at Jonny’s journey in this short Q&A.

What initially attracted you to work for Step One Charity, and how has that initial attraction evolved over the past 10 years?

Jonny: I’m a people person so I knew I wanted to do something that helped other people, and I thought, what a nice job that is to do activities that I would do myself but in a way that supports others and helps them progress! The job is very comfortable for me and I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

What’s your favourite thing about being a Support Worker at Step One Charity?

Jonny: It’s been very interesting being a support worker. It’s not like a normal 9 to 5. The beauty of it is that you become very adaptable to different people and different situations. I like seeing the people I support achieve something and making them happy. The job also brings out a lot of positive things about yourself as a person.

Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time with Step One that stands out to you?

Jonny: I enjoyed going to Calvert Trust with some of the people we support. It’s an outdoorsy activity centre in Exmoor. Three of us (support workers) arranged the trip and we went along for a long weekend full of activities. It was amazing. Swimming, archery, football, hockey – I really enjoyed myself and it was a really positive experience for the people we support.

How have you grown both personally and professionally during your time at Step One Charity?

Jonny: More skills, and in particular, life skills. I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in anything specific, but with this job you know a little about a lot of things. The job pushes you to do things you wouldn’t usually do yourself, and whilst supporting others I’ve definitely picked up a lot of skills for myself too. I think my biggest thing is seeing the families of the people I support and building up a relationship with them. I said to one person the other day, “can you believe we’ve known each other for 10 years!” We’ve had some really good times and nice bonding memories.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of working for Step One over the past decade?

Jonny: I think just the job in general and working with people and families; making a difference or hoping to make a difference.

What advice would you give to those considering a career as a Community Support Worker?

Jonny: My advice would be to go with the flow and be yourself.

Happy 10-year work anniversary and congratulations, Jonny!
