Step One has a long and distinguished history, dating back to 1937. We offer a comprehensive combination of mental health support, supported living, and support in the community to up to 800 people in Devon each year.

Today, Step One provides a range of support to enable people to manage their mental health and wellbeing and take positive steps forward to achieving their goals. We offer support through:

  • Rehabilitation and recovery at our intensive inpatient service
  • Supported living housing
  • One-to-one support in the community
  • Group-based support in the community through online and in-person wellbeing sessions, activities, and learning opportunities
  • Psychologically informed interventions through our Recovery Practitioners service

We have made many significant achievements over recent years and Step One has a solid foundation, a clear 5-year strategy and a Senior Leadership Team with the skills to deliver the next phase of our journey. It is an exciting time to join our increasingly successful charity.

The Roles

With the imminent departure of our esteemed Chair, we are leading the search for a new Chair and a number of new Trustees to grow and strengthen our current Board. We have identified priority areas to complement our existing strengths.

In our Chair, we are seeking someone who ideally brings experience in Chairing in a similar capacity. This could be a charity or Public Sector Board, or someone who brings significant experience as a charity Trustee with Committee chair experience. In addition, as our Chair or our new Trustees, you may bring experience in one (or more) of these areas:

  • Clinical background with an emphasis on mental health
  • NHS Commissioning
  • Finance and / or investment management
  • Legal
  • Property acquisition or management (either commercial or domestic)
  • Commercial expertise and acumen

We welcome interest from people with lived experience of mental health challenges, learning disabilities, or neurodiversity, and we encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to better reflect the communities we serve.

The role of a trustee is an invaluable and important role. Our Board is the ultimate governance body for Step One, being responsible for our operations, finances and strategy. Our Chair and trustees provide strategic leadership and direction of the charity and ensure that we have appropriate financial and good governance checks and balances in place.

Trustees are generous with their support and willingly offer their skills, knowledge, expertise, and diversity of thought to ensure Step One, working in partnership with our Senior Leadership Team, goes from strength to strength. They also represent the charity externally, assisting in raising our profile and help to build relationships with key stakeholders.
