Meet Amy - Our London Marathon runner

Hello! I’m Amy. I’m running the London Marathon 2021 for Step One Charity!

“I started my running journey 10 years ago in an attempt to lose a bit of weight after a breakdown in 2008 saw me lose all motivation and confidence in myself. I didn’t know the benefits for my mental health at this point… little did I know I would be running for my sanity as well as to lose some pounds!

Running has been my saviour, and continues to be, particularly in the pandemic where there is little else to do. Along with my ‘trainer’ Benny, I am often found spending my weekends pounding the pavements and local trails – if you see me please do say hello!

Running the London Marathon is a huge honour, and to do so for such an important local charity makes it all the more special for me. If you were to ask me 5 years ago if I would be able to do this, I would have laughed and changed the subject! I am both thrilled and terrified of the challenge ahead, particularly the training and hours I need to put in.

We are raising funds to support more people with their wellbeing, with services that just weren’t available during my own struggles with poor mental health. Being able to support people personally has been amazing and I only hope Step One can continue this important work during and after the pandemic.

My training up to this point has been going well, although the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccination stopped my training temporarily! I hope to share more of my plans and training updates as I go.

Depression is often referred to as the “Black Dog” – My gorgeous Golden Doggy and I hope that all the hours we are putting in will persuade you to spare a few pounds to help tame the ‘Black Dog’ for people in Devon!”
