Have you ever considered a career as a community support worker? If you’re wondering what a typical day might look like, you’ve come to the right place. We’re here to explain how diverse and utterly rewarding this role can be. If you enjoy working with others and helping people achieve a better quality of life, then community support work might be the career path for you.
Here at Step One Charity, community support work is all about variety. Our specialist team enable people who have autism spectrum conditions, mental health concerns, learning difficulties or dual diagnosis to thrive in their communities and gain the confidence and skills to live with as much independence and choice as possible.
A typical day is led by the person you’re supporting – one day you could be supporting with medical appointments and life skills such as searching for work, managing finances and/or cooking, and the next you could be taking a trip to a local café and paddleboarding at Exeter’s historic Quayside. No two days are the same and no two people will be the same either, which makes this such a varied, challenging and rewarding job.
One of the people Lucy supports said:
“I enjoy catching up with my support worker at independent cafes”.
Our incredible support workers across Devon are motivated by seeing people make progress. Lucy, one of our community support workers based in Exeter, said her favourite things about the role are that it’s creative, active, varied, permanent, and that you get to apply your own skills.
“Step One is a rewarding place to work with a great friendly supportive team. A varied job that changes every day. One where you can go home at the end of the day and know you’ve made a difference.”
Becoming a community support worker will allow you to make a real difference to people’s lives, supporting them to make the most of their future. If you’re thinking of joining us, hopefully you’re starting to see just what an incredible impact you could have.
